Early Bird Coverage of 2005 Scholarships
The Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Club Scholarship Breakfast was held on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at The Waterfront Restaurant in Redwood City to award sixteen local high school students from Sequoia High School; Woodside High School; Notre Dame; Menlo Atherton and Menlo High School.
President, Donna Vaillancourt very graciously opened the meeting, and George Borg lead us with the Pledge of Allegiance, as Barbara Liedtke started the Invocation. Lt. Governor, Lanie Wheeler presented Bill Lowell and David Aman with Hixson awards, and Carole Stewart was given a Distinguished Service Award.
Scholarship Committee Chair, Maureen Fish introduced from the head table; Maria Guzman, representing the family, El Centro de Libertad, Mike Akana, and George and Janet Borg for the Maggie Cuadros Memorial Scholarship, Viv and Rueben Donig representing the Solomon Newman Memorial Scholarship, Harry Tong , representing the Phil and Louise Wang Family Scholarship, Bill Yamada, with the Yamada Family Scholarship, and Chuck Rigg with the Charles and Jean Rigg Scholarship. Tom Fitzpatrick, Assistant to the Superintendent, SMCOE gave another inspiring speech to all of the recipients about looking ahead, and the family support that sustains their future.
Redwood City Mayor, Jeff Ira also talked about the importance of family, teachers, counselors and all who affect the young lives of the honorees. Other community dignitaries sitting at the head table were; Vice Mayor, Barbara Pierce, Sarah Rosendahl from Joe Simitian’s office, and Nate Pinkston, with Ira Ruskin’s office.

Thanks to the Romanos for the beautiful flowers for our tables and podium. Thank you to all committee members who poured their heart and souls into picking these fine recipients; Maureen Fish, Grace Allen, Girdie Bernard, George Borg, Jan Borg, Lourdes Carini, Margie Carrington, Glenn Lew, Barbara Liedtke, Bill Lowell, Patty McGowan, Melanie Souffrant, and Donna Vaillancourt.
