Additional Bay Area Homeless Alliance Services

Voice Mail

Voice mail was available in San Francisco and Santa Clara County.  Limited voice mail service was also available at a few agencies scattered across the Bay Area. One of the goals of The Bay Area Homeless Alliance was to extend voice mail service throughout the Bay Area.

While BAHA was exploring various solutions to bringing region wide voice mail, the Baha'i Spiritual Assembly in Danville had developed a volunteer based model for similar services.  Chris Palmer of helped coordinate the Baha'i efforts regionwide, identifying Spiritual Assemblies in each county that were willing to house equipment and provide volunteers to provide training and technical support in setting up and maintaining the equipment. Apex Communication provided equipment and systems.

The Bay Area Homeless Alliance identified human services agencies that were willing to provide case management and assign voice mail boxes. Through the joint efforts of the Bahai'i, BAHA, and local social services agencies, voice mail was available throughout the Bay Area.

Funding for telephone lines in San Mateo County was covered in the first few years by the Peninsula Community Foundation. Donations from private individuals helped cover costs for an additional year.

Shelter Hotline

1-800-7-SHELTER, is operated by The Community Technology Alliance (CTA) to provide information on the availability of shelter beds.
